Malaria Country Context
Malaria remains a fact of life for billions of people around the world. Although considerable progress has been made in malaria control in the Greater Mekong Subregion, the spread of antimalarial resistance threatens to undermine these gains.
In 2018, Cambodia reported only one death due to malaria. Malaria incidence is highest in the Northeastern parts of the country and lower in the Western provinces. Peak transmission is between July and November when the country transitions from the hot season to the rainy one. The malaria parasite species Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum are co-endemic.
Despite successes, the development and spread of resistance to artemisinin drugs, the first-line treatment for malaria in the region, remains a challenge. The country is working to develop evidence-based approaches that can be scaled up to achieve national elimination of both P. falciparum and P. vivax.
